Is Your Floor Creaky?

If your floor is extra creaky, it is usually an indication that something is wrong with the floorboards or subflooring. But, don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you need to tear everything out, it just means you should possibly have someone out to take a peak. Here are some common reasons why your floor might be creaking:

  • Loose Floorboards: If your floorboards are loose, they can rub against each other and create a squeaking or creaky sound. This is a common problem in older homes where the floorboards have started to separate from each other over time.

  • Subflooring Issues: The subflooring, which is the layer of material beneath the flooring, can also be a source of creaks. If the subflooring is not properly secured or has become damaged, it can cause the flooring to creak when you walk on it.

  • Humidity and Moisture: Changes in humidity and moisture levels can cause the wood in your flooring to expand and contract, which can create gaps between the floorboards. These gaps can cause the floorboards to rub against each other and make a squeaking sound.

  • Poor Installation: If the flooring was not installed properly, it can cause squeaks. For example, if the floorboards were not nailed down securely or if the underlayment was not properly installed, it can lead to squeaks over time.
